The magnificent countryside changes with the seasons; in spring, vibrant yellow, red and blue fields surround the area, in summer the area is green and kissed by the radiant sun, in autumn the trees turn gold, red and copper and in winter, snow covers the mountains when skiing and tobogganing become the favourite pastimes.
There are 4 skiing areas within a 20 minute drive. The nearest is only 5 mins drive away where there is also a Bobsleigh run. Cross country skiing trails are a 20 minute drive away.
The Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts are both just an hour drive away.
The area is an artists paradise. There are views and scenery to delight and tantalise any painter.
For walkers there are 240km of signposted walks within the Sila National Park.
Fly direct from the UK to Lamezia. Lamezia airport to Lorica is a very scenic 1 hour 15 mins. Car hire not essential but is recommended. There is a local taxi/minibus which can collect you from the airport and take you on any trips required but does need to be booked in advance.
IN THE AREA
The nearest large town is 25 minutes drive away; SAN GIOVANNI IN FIORE; a small medieval town on the east of the Sila Grande between the rivers Neto and Arvo. San Giovanni is the oldest, largest and most important centre of the Sila. Here you will find large supermarkets and a variety of shops; clothes, household, DIY, electrical, hairdressers, handicraft and gift shops. There are also many wonderful cafes and restaurants with stunning views. The town is steeped in history. The Abbanzia Florense is the oldest monument in the town built in 1200AD. The story of San Giovanni revolves around this church. In the Crypt are the remains of Giacchino Abbate the founder of the Florense Order of the Capuchin. At the entrance to one of the streets that lead to the Abbey Square, is a medieval gothic Norman Arch; the only one left in the town.
Also 25 minutes drive away is CAMIGLIATELLO; A small village on the edge of the national park of the Sila, a natural reserve area with pine trees over 100 years old. It is the best equipped ski resort in Southern Italy with two ski lifts and 397 metres of vertical descent, 4 pistes and cross country ski trails.
A picturesque hour drive away to the east is SANTA SEVERINA; Situated on the top of a rocky precipice overlooking the valley near to Crotone. The village has a magnificent Castle, said to be one of the most beautiful in Calabria. It is situated in the main square and archeological digs found Byzantine, Roman and Greek artifacts which are on display. There is also a Cathedral built in 1274-95 with its original preserved portal and the Baptistry next door is one of the oldest monuments in Calabria.
Also just over an hour drive away to the south east is LE CASTELLA. A pretty village on the coast with a small castle and plenty of restaurants and cafes to sit in and while away a few hours.
An hour drive away towards the West is COSENZA, the provincial capital in Calabria. The town is split into two parts; the old town with a castle and the modern city. Here you will find all the large shops you would expect in an Italian city.
